Split the rent, keep the roommates.

Halves keeps one ledger for the apartment, works out every share the second a bill lands, and sends the reminder so you never have to.

How it works

Set up in the group chat, settled by the 1st

Nobody installs a spreadsheet. One person starts the house, the others tap a link, and every bill after that splits itself.

Name it, drop the link in the chat, and everyone is on the same ledger before the kettle boils.

Add a bill, or just forward it

Type it, snap it, or forward the email. Halves reads the amount and splits it the way the house agreed.

  3. Hey Rafa — your $412.50 for September is ready. Due Friday, pay here whenever.

    Everyone pays their share

Each roommate gets a text with their number and a pay link. The tone is a heads-up, never a chase.

The ledger

One tab for the whole apartment

Rent, utilities, the couch you all agreed on — every dollar lands on one running ledger, so the question is never who paid what. It is only ever who still owes.

Shares, not IOUs
Each bill becomes three exact numbers. Nobody rounds, nobody guesses.
Nets itself out
Paid the internet? It comes off your rent share. One payment a month, not nine.
History that survives roommates
When someone moves out, their tab closes cleanly and the house keeps going.

Built for the parts of rent that ruin friendships

The number is rarely the problem. It is the asking, the remembering, and the month someone moves out.

Reminders that read the room

Three tones, chosen by how late it is. Before the due date it is a heads-up. After it, still not a lecture.

Roommates, on the record

We went two years without a single rent text. Not one.

Ada Trask

Roommate of three, Apt 4B, Brooklyn

I used to be the house accountant. Now the couch is split four ways and I found out from a notification.

Soren Vance

Grad student, Chicago

Every new lease at Bergen gets a Halves link in the welcome email. Late rent between roommates dropped to almost nothing.

What every house asks

Anything else, text us. A person answers, usually within the hour.

Text +1 (512) 555-0147
Does everyone in the house need the app?

No. One person starts the house; the others get their share and a pay link by text and can pay from the message. Anyone who wants the full ledger installs the app.

How does the money actually move?

Halves never holds it. Each roommate pays their share straight to whoever fronted the bill, or to the landlord, through the payment app they already use.

Can we split unevenly?

Yes. Set shares by room size, by a percentage, or per bill. The couch can be three ways while rent stays 40 / 30 / 30.

What happens when someone moves out?

Their tab closes to the day they leave, including their slice of the deposit. The house keeps its history and the new roommate joins with a link.

What does it cost?

Free for houses of up to four. Larger houses and buildings that hand it out at move-in pay $3 a month per house.

Do the reminders really not nag?

The first one is a heads-up before the due date, the second a short nudge, the third a plain note that someone covered you. You can read all three on this page.
